Maize is the most widely grown crop in the world, its largest producer being the USA. Maize is grown almost round the year in India and is a high yielding crop.
Maize was once a staple diet of the majority population in India but today it has grown its roots into being the commercial crop. It is widely used to procure starch, alcohol, gum, leather polish etc. Maize, along with India, is grown in all major nations.
We have some really interesting facts and figures related to maize production. China is on top in terms of sowing seeds; it uses 37 mn ha of land to cultivate maize. Then comes America which cultivates 33 mn ha of land followed by Brazil with 15 mn ha of land. While the maximum land cultivated is in China, it ranks third with a yield of 5822 kg maize per hectare. Argentina, ranking second worldwide, has a better yield of 6844 kg maize per hectare. America has the maximum yield of 10,744 kg maize per hectare. India stands at fifth place in maize production.
In this fourth episode, experts have talked in detail about the challenges that farmers face when it comes to cultivating maize crop and advised some recommendations. They have emphasized the use of good quality and certified seeds. They threw light on various technologies available for the sowing of seeds and what are the issues pertaining to them. They have also talked about other major challenges including the pests, & diseases like stem borer, fairy caterpillar, and weeds like nadeen/motha which are the major causes of the crop destruction. They have recommended the use of agrochemicals along with proper tools & techniques which can be used to reduce the pests & diseases which in turn increases the yield.
